AZO – Sampling & testing for forbidden AZO dyes in printed textiles

General

• all colour ways within a sample have to be broken down to the lowest homogenous level
• colour ways can be separated by cutting normally
• prints do not need to be scraped off from the base fabric
• a coloured print on a base fabric has to be handled as one single colour way
• the dyed base fabric has to be handled as one single colour way

Sampling and testing procedure

• testing on forbidden AZO dyes in a printed product includes always the cutting /testing of the base fabric
itself and separately the cutting/testing of the print on that base fabric
• at maximum 3 colour ways may be tested together in a composite sample
• all colour ways have to be assessed independently of each other

Example
T-shirt, black base fabric with 3 separable prints in red, blue and green

Following samples (colour ways) have to be prepared:
• black base fabric
• black base fabric with red print
• black base fabric with blue print
• black base fabric with green print

The following 2 tests have to be performed:
• test of black base fabric
• test of composite sample consisting of base fabric with red print, base fabric with blue print and base
fabric with green print

Assessment:
→ if the result of the base fabric is <20mg/kg, the base fabric is PASS
→ if the result of the composite sample is <5 mg/kg, the red, blue and green prints are PASS
• if the result of the composite sample is >5 mg/kg, the following single tests have to be carried out:
- black base fabric with red print
- black base fabric with blue print
- black base fabric with green print

→ if then the result of one (or more) single test is >20 mg/kg, this colour way is FAIL and complete article has to be judged as FAIL
