What is Nickel?
Nickel is a silver white metal that is added to or plated on other metals because of its hardness and corrosion resistance properties.

Why is Nickel restricted?
Nickel can cause contact dermatitis for those who are sensitised to it and where the product is in direct and prolonged contact with the skin. Approximately 8% of people (predominately female) are sensitive to nickel.

How does it get into the product?
Nickel is applied as plating to many accessories such as earrings, bracelets, zippers, watches, studs, rivets, belt buckles etc.

What are the legal requirements?
All metal components in direct and prolonged contact with skin must meet REACH directive no1907/2006 Annex XVII Entry 27.
The maximum permitted level for nickel release is stated in product specific test tables.
