Why pH value is concerned in textile and garments industry?

What is pH?

♦pH is the negative logarithm of the effective hydrogen ion concentration

- expressing both acidity and alkalinity.

♦ ranges from 0 – 14 , which 7 represents neutral,

pH values

♦The pH values in garments can be greatly affected by:

-scouring,

-bleaching,

-after-treatment

-final washing process.

Why pH value is concerned in textile and garments industry?

♦Human skins are slightly acidic in nature

-to inhibit bacteria growth.

♦Textile process involves the use of strong acids or alkalis,

-with a too high or low pH

-may cause irritation to skin when in contact

What material should be tested?

♦Natural and synthetic textile fibers.

Points to be noted:

♦Careful rinsing or washing of the finished garments

-removes skin irritating chemicals

♦when alkaline bleaching processes have been carried out, normal washing may not rinse off all the chemicals.

-acidic neutralization may be the only solution.

-e.g. Acetic acid.
